Persepolis

In 1970s Iran, Marjane 'Marji' Satrapi watches a long dream being fulfilled of the hated Shah's defeat in the Iranian Revolution of 1979. However as Marji grows up, she witnesses first hand how the new Iran, now ruled by Islamic fundamentalists, has become a repressive tyranny of its own.

Marjane Satrapi, the Iranian French author, director, graphic artist and human rights activist passed away on 4th June. She rose to international acclaim with her comic book Persepolis that made her one of the most widely read Iranian authors in the world. This was followed by her ground-breaking debut film of the same title that gave audiences insight into the political oppression in her homeland and which led her to become the first woman nominated for an Academy Award for Best Animated Feature.
