We are delighted that David Tibet (pictured above, centre) of British hallucinatory supergroup Current 93, has chosen a selection of cult films that have inspired and entertained him, for two special screenings at the Electric Palace on 25 and 26 May.
David will introduce his film choices, Sweeney Todd The Demon Barber of Fleet Street, and A Dark Song, in person next weekend for our Cult Cinema Weekend.
The screenings coincide with a sold-out performance from his band, Current 93, elsewhere in Hastings over the same weekend, and following their also sold-out London appearance prior to the screenings.
During the Cult Cinema Weekend screenings we will be displaying some original artworks of David’s and his partner, visual artist Ania Goszczyńska, and you will be able to buy some signed Current 93 artworks at the screenings, too.
Sweeney Todd, The Demon Barber of Fleet Street + short film
Saturday 25 May 2024, 2.30pm
Includes short film 'London After Dark', with live introduction from David Tibet of Current 93.
The films feature the terrifying talents of Newcastle’s Norman Carter—otherwise known as ‘Tod’—Slaughter – the first true icon of British horror cinema.
As part of this special presentation, in addition to Sweeney Todd, we are screening “London After Dark”, a short silent film featuring Tod Slaughter’s first ever cinematic appearance, with an original Current 93 soundtrack, alongside a collective listen to the original radio broadcast of Tod Slaughter and Company performing Sweeney Todd.
Criminally overlooked by film historians, and only previously seen in compromised versions, these cult cinema classics have been newly restored using original film materials preserved at the BFI National Archive.
A Dark Song + Intro from David Tibet
Sunday 26 May 2024, 2.30pm
This film is a modern occult-themed classic starring Steve Oran and Catherine Walker, and a uniquely disturbing slice of British cult cinema. Bereaved mother Sophia rents a house in the countryside of Wales and hires the occultist Joseph Solomon to contact her son, who she suspects was kidnapped and murdered by black magicians.
