Kedi is a magical documentary about the street cats of Istanbul, told from a cat's eye perspective, revealing as much about the inhabitants of Istanbul as the cats themselves. This is a must-see for cat-lovers!
For centuries, the streets of Istanbul have offered a home to thousands of feral cats. Following a wily cast of notorious felines and the locals who care for them, this documentary explores how these whiskered residents have shaped the rapidly changing metropolis they live in. Alongside amusing feline footage — cats snoozing contentedly on terrifyingly high window ledges, kittens scrapping in roadside cardboard boxes — Kedi deftly goes beyond that and offers eloquent insights into the modern city, animals, humans and the relationship between all three.
Thursday 11am screenings only £5 and include a free cuppa.
Plus! See two silent cinema cat classics
Our evening screening of Kedi will be accompanied by two silent cinema cat classics, The Sick Kitten and La Petite Fille et Son Chat, plus live musical accompaniment by artists and musicians Montague Armstrong to launch our Art at the Palace Show for Coastal Currents this year: Cinema Cats: 'The Sick Kitten,' from artists Montague Armstrong.
About Cinema Cats: The Sick Kitten exhibition
Visit the exhibition before every public screening during Coastal Currents this September: A 1903 British silent directed by GA Smith from the 'Brighton School' shows two children tending to a sick kitten; the starting point for a new series of original art of cats and kittens made by Montague Armstrong of 15 Kings Road. Original monoprints, bold and vibrant, made in an experimental process based on etching and using imagery in the spirit of a golden age of family matinees, inspired by film posters and creative expressions of children's cinema during the Soviet era.
