Black Orpheus

1959 retelling of Orpheus and Eurydice set at the Rio de Janeiro Carnaval, with an incandescent bossa nova soundtrack.

Young lovers Orfeu and Eurydice run through the favelas of Rio during Carnaval, on the lam from a hitman dressed like Death and Orfeu's vengeful fiancée Mira and passing between moments of fantasy and stark reality.

This impressionistic retelling of the Greek legend introduced bossa nova to the world with its bewitching soundtrack by young Brazilian composers Luiz Bonfá and Antonio Carlos Jobim.

Screened as part of our Hidden Beach - Summer of Culture Season.

Since its beginnings, Hidden Beach has brought people together through live music, film, food, movement and conversation — creating spaces where culture is not only presented, but practiced together. The Electric Palace is a proud partner.
