Whit Stillman’s 1998 cult classic stars Chloë Sevigny and Kate Beckinsale as recent college grads living in New York in the early 1980s. Working publishing jobs by day and hitting the clubs by night, they exist in a haze of glitter, alcohol, and witticisms. But the disco movement is about to end, forcing them to confront a changing social scene, as well as an array of acerbic, hyper-privileged acquaintances. It’s Jane Austen set in 1980s Manhattan.
The dress code is of course DISCO. Anything goes, so dig out your sequins, feathers, and gold lamé! Arrive at 7pm when doors open to enjoy a DJ set of feel-good disco classics followed by one of the best, most underrated films of the 90s. 7pm - doors open and DJ set 7:45pm - short introduction followed by film.
Lazy Girls Film Club Programmer Eleanor says…
"Whit Stillman’s satire is defined by a balance between affectionate playfulness and a keen critical eye. There is much pleasure to be taken from his dryly funny dialogue and unsentimental honesty about the often bad behaviour of these young Manhattanites. Beckinsale is hilariously brilliant as the haughty, manipulative Charlotte Pingress, while Chloë Sevigny is the beating heart of the film as Alice Kinnon. Gilmore Girls fans will recognise Chris Eigeman (aka Jason ‘Digger’ Stiles), who was one of Stillman’s regular collaborators throughout the '90s."
