Les Diaboliques is a suspenseful piece of classic French cinema, where the wife and mistress of a loathed school principal plan to murder him with what they believe is the perfect alibi.
The trailblazing French actress, Simone Signoret, defied Hollywood’s ageism to win an Academy Award for Room at the Top, alongside multiple wins at BAFTA, the Oscars, Cannes Film Festival and the Golden Globes. She was a French actress known for her portrayal of fallen romantic heroines and headstrong older women. Her tumultuous marriage to actor Yves Montand and the couple’s championing of several left-wing causes often provoked controversy and brought her notoriety.
This movie was made by Signoret in her heyday as a fleshier, blowsier French version of Marilyn Monroe. She makes a dramatic contrast to the petite Vera Clouzot, the director’s wife; he often frames little Christina with Nicole and Michael looming over her.
