War Pony premiered in Un Certain Regard at Cannes Film Festival last year, winning the Caméra d’Or for best first feature.

War Pony is the directing debut of actress Riley Keough (Zola, American Honey), who directs alongside Gina Gammell. The film intertwines the story of two Native American teenagers – one a young man, the other a boy – growing up on the Pine Ridge Reservation in South Dakota. Older teen Bill (Jojo Bapteise Whiting) has already fathered two children, and senses economic opportunity after he gives roadside assistance to a white farmer. Younger teen Matho (Ladainian Crazy Thunder) has a troubled home life, and applies his entrepreneurial instincts to sell meth at school.

"The tenderness, wisdom and instinct to survive of two teenage males is beautifully observed in actor-turned-director Riley Keough’s debut feature" - The Guardian, 4 stars

One comparison point might be the early films of Chloé Zhao: Songs My Brother Taught Me and The Rider.
