In postwar Britain, Sarah Waters’ novel reveals that as a boy, Dr. Faraday recalled being awed by the impressive estate of Hundreds Hall. His mother was a housekeeper there and it had been owned for generations by the wealthy Ayres family. When the doctor returns to his home town years later, he finds the house and its occupants in disarray. He soon discovers the family matriarch, her daughter and ailing son are plagued by mysterious and disturbing occurrences in the house. Determined to get to the bottom of the increasingly sinister events, Dr. Faraday isn't prepared for the secrets and lies that will envelop his own life.
