In 1934, if you're in London and you go see a play in a theatre, when you see an old man writing vigorously in a notebook, this man is a critic, somebody with the power to raise an actress's career to stardom or send it crashing down around them.

The Critic revolves around a such a feared theatre critic named Jimmy Erskine, his loyal assistant, a newspaper owner who wants to get rid of the critic and an actress who has been devastated by the excoriating theatrical reviews. The critic’s determination to survive ensures that the other characters are caught in a web of blackmail, deceit and murder.

Starring multiple Academy Award winner and star of stage and screen, Sir Ian McKellen, in a theatrical thriller to complement our Theatre on Screen series and Stars on Screen mini season. With excellent performances from supporting cast Gemma Arterton (Quantum of Solace), Mark Strong (Tinker Tailor Soldier Spy) and Lesley Manville (Mrs. Harris Goes to Paris).

Thursday morning screenings include a free hot drink with your ticket, and subtitles where possible.
