Screening as part of our newly launched TV Season celebrating the classics and cults of the small screen!
British TV comedy is some of the best in the world, and we are delighted to host an evening of classic TV comedy with special guest, Smack the Pony's Doon MacKichan.
Originally "Spot the Pony", the series title was changed to "Smack the Pony" which some people mistakenly assumed was some kind of sexual euphemism. A pilot was filmed featuring Sally Phillips, Fiona Allen and Amanda Holden and after watching and loving it Doon Mackichan joined. When a full series was commissioned Holden dropped out and Doon Mackichan took her place.
Deliberately silly and avoiding repetitive catchphrases, the show's surreal humour proved popular and the series had a regular audience of around 2.5 million viewers in the UK during its heyday in the late '90s and early noughties.
We are delighted to show three classic episodes from each of the three series .... and welcome Doon Mackichan for a Q&A with Smack the Pony contributor, author, music journalist and comedy writer, David Quantick, after the screening!
