In this family drama, Sarah (Eva Green) is a French astronaut training at the European Space Agency in Cologne. The only woman in the arduous programme, Sarah struggles with feelings of guilt over leaving her young daughter. When she is chosen to join a yearlong space mission called Proxima alongside veteran astronaut Mike Shanon (Matt Dillon), it creates chaos in the mother-daughter relationship. Sarah is further burdened with the daily toils of the patriarchal workplace.
Proxima lets this theme bubble away beneath the surface. Sexism here is complex. Mike casually accuses her of being a “space tourist”, but is equally capable of showing tenderness and generosity. And yet, Sarah must work twice as hard as the men to prove she’s earned her place and to overcome the stigma of being a single mother. This is a poignant tribute to a mother’s resilience.
