Summer Music Season 2024
122 mins / 2024 / UK

Screening as part of  our Summer Music Season 2024 this is a behind-the-scenes glimpse into singer-songwriter Amy Winehouse’s early rise to fame and the release of her groundbreaking studio album, Back to Black.

Inspired by Amy’s deeply personal and honest lyrics, the film is an unapologetic look at the woman behind the phenomenon and the tumultuous relationship at the centre of one of the most legendary albums of all time.

From director Sam Taylor-Johnson (Nowhere Boy), Back to Black tells the remarkable story of beloved homegrown star Amy Winehouse, documenting both her rise to global fame, as well as her troubled relationship with Blake Fielder-Civil. Both her demons and her artistry are presented with sensitivity and authenticity in this heartfelt biopic which is set against a vibrant early-noughties Camden.

Anchored by a remarkable performance by Marisa Abela as Amy Winehouse herself, Jack O'Connell, Eddie Marsan and Lesley Manville also star in this powerful tribute.

Abela conveys her tenderness, and perhaps most poignantly of all her youth, so tellingly at odds with that tough image and eerily mature voice. - The Guardian
