Strange Frames, a new film club that highlights the offbeat, grotesque and arcane on film, exploring folklore, myth and legend, presents two folk favourites as part of Hastings's Jack in the Green mayday celebrations!
See Ken Russell's erotic and unhinged The Lair of the White Worm, starring Hugh Grant and Peter Capaldi in early roles and a rare chance to watch Alan Clarke’s folk horror classic, Penda’s Fen on the big screen.
And as if that’s not enough our firm favourite The Wicker Man returns to the Electric Palace for it’s annual Jack in the Green screening – but this time we are screening both the Directors Cut and the Theatrical Cut – pick your favourite or see both and decide which you prefer!
The Lair of the White Worm
From the legendary mind of Bram Stoker, author of Dracula, comes a chilling tale of ancient evil and unspeakable horror. The Lair of the White Worm weaves a spine-tingling story of a mysterious woman, a monstrous serpent, and a dark force lurking beneath the English countryside. Prepare for a journey into the macabre, erotic and otherworldly….
Introduced by Strange Frames curator, Katie Spooner.
Screening: Saturday 3 May 7:30pm

Penda’s Fen
A haunting masterpiece of British folk horror, Penda’s Fen explores identity, mythology, and the eerie undercurrents of the English landscape. As a teenage boy’s rigid worldview unravels, he encounters ancient spirits, political unrest, and the lingering presence of England’s pagan past. A surreal and thought-provoking journey into history, mysticism, and self-discovery.
Introduced by Strange Frames curator, Katie Spooner.
Screening: Sunday 4 May 11am
The Wicker Man
The ultimate in Folk Horror, join us on Sunday 4 May for two screenings of The Wicker Man. The film follows a devout police sergeant’s search for a missing girl on a remote Scottish island—only to uncover a secretive pagan society with dark intentions. As mystery and ritual intertwine, the tension builds to one of cinema’s most unforgettable climaxes. Haunting, provocative, and steeped in eerie atmosphere, The Wicker Man remains a must-see cult classic.
Join us at 3pm for the lesser seen Director's Cut, delving into Sargeant Howie’s religious background and exploring the mythology of Summerisle in more depth, or come along to our screening of the more intense, story driven Theatrical Cut, that same evening!
