Can you describe a film you have shown at the Electric Palace or at our film festival?
My favourite film screened at the Electric Palace is Glitter and Storm, for which I recorded sound. It is a film about local all year swimmers and it was amazing having the reaction of the audience.
Do you remember a moment when your love for the moving image was sparked?
I remember watching Dracula by Francis Ford Coppola and thinking it would be amazing to make a film. I was young!
Can you tell us about a film that you would have liked to make?
I wish I were as adventurous a filmmaker as Werner Herzog, possibly surviving the Fitzcarraldo shooting experience.
What does filmmaking offer you as an artist?
I studied architecture, and filmmaking offers me ways to explore how to tell stories in space, whether that is the physical space or the space of the frame.
Is there something you try to subvert, avoid or rebel against in your work?
I am always ready to try something new in terms of production, working in a different way with form and materials. My latest film involves printing and animating thousands of A4 pages!
How do you plan your work – with a script, storyboards or another method?
I enjoy writing a script and having a solid story before shooting or animating. Depending on the project I use a storyboard, a mood board or small notes I make on the back of my hand.
Do you need to collaborate to make your work?
I feel the need to collaborate with as many people as I can but circumstances often lead me to working on my own in a dark shed, usually animating.
How has living in Hastings has influenced your work?
I try to add seagulls in all my films!
Do live audiences in a cinema matter to you?
It is always a unique experience to feel the energy in the room as the audience watches a film you have made, for filmmakers and viewers alike.
