Going two rounds with Stallone, Mr T and Dolph Lundgren. Knockout!
The Electric Palace Cinema presents two rounds of classic boxing with a one-two punch screening of Rocky III and Rocky IV.
Sylvester Stallone returns to the character who made him famous in these wildly successful and hugely entertaining sequels.
Rocky III starts with the Italian Stallion as world champion, so famous his likeness is everywhere. Fame and complacency soon cause Rocky to lose his title to up-and-coming boxer Clubber Lang (Mr. T in his movie acting debut). After sinking into depression, Rocky must regain the love and support of his family, as well as the elusive "eye of the tiger”; the hungry need to beat the opponent (as taught to him by former foe Apollo Creed). The final rematch with Clubber Lang is a showcase for that 'thrill of the fight'.
Rocky IV dials up the 80s excess even further as he takes on the epic battle of east vs west. Ivan Drago is Russia’s near-robotic fighting machine, honed in a state-of-the-art gym. This is the apotheosis of Reagan-era Hollywood; over-the-top Soviet villains, enormous montage sequences, and an infamous subplot involving Rocky's brother-in-law falling in love with a robot. Plus, of course, the musical sequence featuring Godfather of Soul, James Brown.
Curated and presented by David Valentine, local cinephile and record shop owner. There will be an interval and Rocky trivia quiz in between the two film screenings.
